Start with a diagnosis when the problem may be limited to glass, hardware, seals or a particular opening. A repair scope should explain which part failed, what will be supplied and what the work is expected to resolve. Describe the symptom before choosing the remedy
Record the room, window identifier and when the problem appears. Photograph the full opening and the affected area without removing trim or disturbing paint. If operation seems unsafe, leave the sash alone and ask for professional assessment.

Preserve a useful comparison
Ask for a repair scope and, when appropriate, a replacement alternative. The repair should name the supplied component and compatibility, labor, finishing and warranty. The replacement should define the installation method and which surrounding materials remain. Compare the problems each option resolves, rather than comparing totals alone.
A repaired balance does not update glass performance. Replacing a sealed glass unit does not by itself resolve wall leakage. Historic and older windows need additional care

What to bring to the assessment
Bring opening photos, any product labels or warranty records, the symptom history and your main objective. Ask the evaluator to separate observed facts from concealed conditions that have not been checked. Record whether a repair part exists and whether matching finishes are possible before treating repair as a settled option.
