Not every bad window needs replacing. A fogged pane is a failed glass seal, and the insulated glass unit can be replaced in the existing sash. A window that slams shut has a broken balance. A lock that won’t catch is hardware. We repair those — and we tell you plainly when a window has reached the point where repair money is wasted, which is usually when the frame itself is rotted, racked or a 1970s aluminum unit that will never seal.

When to stop repairing
When the frame is soft, when more than a few windows have failed seals at once (the rest are coming), when the window is single-pane with storms you’re tired of, or when the repair quote reaches about half the cost of an insert. Hail: a cracked pane after a spring storm is an insurance conversation before it’s a repair conversation — photograph it and the date. Heat: a failed seal on a west-facing window loses its low-E performance along with its clarity, so a glass replacement should be specified with the same or better glass package, not generic clear.
