In Tulsa the energy job of a window is cooling, not heating: keeping the afternoon sun out of a west-facing living room in a 100-degree August, and keeping the air conditioner from running against it. That means the glass package matters more than the frame material, and the number that matters most is the solar heat gain coefficient, not the U-factor the northern brochures lead with. We specify the glass for the exposure of each window — not one package for the whole house.

Tulsa is in IECC climate zone 3A and ENERGY STAR’s South-Central zone. For that zone, ENERGY STAR’s current window criteria prioritize a low SHGC (solar gain) with a moderate U-factor (insulation); look at the NFRC label for both. A low-E coating tuned for cooling, argon between the panes and a warm-edge spacer is the standard package we quote on south and west elevations; north-facing windows can take a higher-gain glass without penalty. What efficiency actually buys you
Comfort first: rooms you can sit in at 4 p.m. without the blinds down, and no cold glass in January. Lower cooling load second — real, but proportional to how bad the old windows were; single-pane aluminum sliders to low-E double-pane is a big step, 15-year-old double-pane to new is a small one. We won’t promise a utility-bill number for your house; nobody honest can without an energy audit. Vinyl is the value choice and performs well here; fiberglass costs more, moves less in Oklahoma’s temperature swings and holds paint; both come from our partner’s Tulsa plant. Aluminum without a thermal break is the one we replace, not install.
